Description

Join us on October 6 and look for the purple lights and Silent Witnesses (Survivor Silhouettes) in Renton this October to remember your neighbors facing domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Month, and South King County neighbors are gathering at a variety of Purple Light Nights® events in support of survivors, to give a voice to victims, and in solidarity to create awareness and change for more peaceful communities. In addition to raising awareness and educating the public, events will support the work of DAWN - Domestic Abuse Women’s Network, a 501c3 nonprofit founded in 1980 and the largest agency in South King County assisting community members facing DV. Life sized wooden silhouette representing DV survivors will be hosted by government agencies, as well as community organizations and businesses holding private fundraisers for DAWN programs across South King County. QR codes on
the silhouettes lead to true stories from the journeys of real DV survivors (names changed to protect anonymity).
Concerned community members can help by making a gift, hosting a fundraiser or social media challenge to benefit DAWN, and by following “In Her Shoes,” an online interactive story of Sierra, a DV survivor, which will be released in episodes from September 25 throughout the month of October via DAWN’s website, www.dawnrising.org.

A Walk in Her Steps: Purple Light Nights® Renton 1K Solidarity Walk, presented by Renton Chamber of Commerce, Renton Downtown Partnership, City of Renton, and DAWN, and sponsored by Comcast, The Seattle Seahawks, Puget Sound Energy, XFinity and Lockton Companies, starts at the Clock Tower downtown at 3rd & Burnett, and finishes at City Hall at 6:30. Refreshments will be served, hosted by Smoking Monkey Pizza and City of Renton. At 7 PM walkers may continue to show support at the City Council Meeting where Mayor Pavone's Proclamation for DV Awareness Month will be presented to Gina Finley, DAWN's Executive Director.

One in four women and one in seven men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner. Since 1980 DAWN stands with all survivors of domestic abuse, helps them rebuild their lives, and strives to make our communities safer by preventing and addressing violence through education and advocacy. Info about Purple Light Nights events, hosting a fundraiser and “In Her Shoes” is at www.dawnrising.org.

Special thanks to Comcast for its community partnership and sponsorship of DAWN.

In Her Shoes was created by WSCADV (Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence).

Purple Light Nights® is a global DV awareness campaign founded in 2007 by Victoria Throm, a co-founder of Covington Domestic Violence Task Force (CDVTF), supported by Covington Rotary Club. www.purplelightnights.org
